What does a geriatric RT do?
A geriatric RT specializes in respiratory care of the elderly. Duties include assessing breathing status, creating individualized treatment plans, administering bronchodilators and suctioning, managing oxygen needs, and rehabilitating lung function in aging patients.
Where do geriatric RTs typically work?
Many geriatric RTs deliver direct patient care in long-term care facilities like nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities. Others may work in hospitals, home health, hospice or outpatient pulmonary rehab programs that specialize in senior patients.
What unique skills are required?
In addition to clinical respiratory skills, geriatric RTs need knowledge of the aging process, sensitivity to cognitive and physical changes, strong communication skills to interact with elderly patients, and experience adapting therapies to patients' abilities and conditions.
What conditions do they treat?
Common respiratory conditions treated include COPD, pneumonia, pulmonary edema, asthma, lung cancer and effects of general aging like reduced lung capacity and weaker cough reflexes that impact clearing secretions.
Does extra certification help?
While the RRT is the basic requirement, some employers prefer geriatric RTs also obtain the Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) credential or Geriatric Certified Respiratory Therapist-Board Certified (GCRT-BC) certification which demonstrate expertise in senior respiratory care.
