What is a POS plan?
A Point of Service (POS) plan is a type of managed health care plan that combines features of HMOs and PPOs. Like an HMO, members must choose a primary care doctor to direct their care. However, members also have an option to use doctors outside the network for an additional cost, similar to a PPO.
How do POS plans work?
With a POS plan, members pay less if they use doctors within the plan's network. You need to choose a primary care doctor to oversee your care. This doctor provides referrals if you need to see a specialist. You can also see out-of-network doctors without a referral but will pay more out of pocket.
