What services are provided?
I/T/U pharmacies dispense prescription medications to eligible American Indian/Alaska Native people through tribally-operated or IHS facilities. They provide outpatient pharmacy services at I/T/U health centers and hospitals on or near reservations.
Who are their clients?
The primary clients are American Indians/Alaska Natives who receive medical care through I/T/U health systems. This includes registered/descendent members utilizing services to which they are entitled. I/T/U pharmacies help patients access medications.
What oversight exists?
I/T/U pharmacies are regulated by applicable state licensing boards and must meet all Joint Commission accreditation requirements. They operate under IHS policies and federal/tribal pharmaceutical regulations and guidelines.
How are costs determined?
Most medications dispensed through I/T/U pharmacies are available at no direct cost as part of patients' IHS healthcare benefits. Co-payments may apply following clinical review for non-formulary items per individual coverage.
How do clients access them?
Eligible individuals receive pharmacy services and medications through their local I/T/U medical center or health station which maintains their prescription profile records. Mail order options also exist for maintenance medications.
